Not much of a lazy summer for our heroines! From the looks of page 2 of “The Ice Cream Social” — there’s going to be a rumble on the boardwalk. The stunning art on this short is provided by Jonathan Luna. Stay tuned for page three! (No post this Friday.)

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Jonathan Luna is the co-creator of ULTRA, GIRLS, and THE SWORD (all Image Comics). His works also include SPIDER-WOMAN: ORIGIN (Marvel Comics), written by Brian Michael Bendis and Brian Reed.

Jonathan was born in California and spent most of his childhood overseas. He returned to the United States in his late teens.

Writing and drawing comics since he was a child, he graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in Sequential Art.

He currently resides in the Washington D.C. metro area.

The Summer Shorts finale begins! Posted today is page one of the short, “The Ice Cream Social“ written by Sean Causley with art by Jonathan Luna. The next page will post a week from today, Wednesday, August 25 (no post this Friday). The short will then wrap up right before Labor Day (and before you pick up those backpacks and head back to school!).

On another note, Panda Force Summer Shorts is discussed in the second hour of the latest PKD Black Box Podcast with Summer Shorts’ guest creators Shawn Pryor and Julian Lytle (they wrote and created art for Remember the Crime):

This weeks episode is “Panda Packed” as we have a conversation with Panda Dog Press founder & creator of “Animal Control: Special Creatures Unit” Rob Anderson as we discuss the creation of his comic, storytelling, licensed comics, and his involvement in the “Comics Experience,” which is headed by IDW Senior Editor Andy Schmidt.

Then we go all out as we discuss the “Panda Force Summer Shorts” webcomics with “Panda Force” creator Sean Causley & the Glyph Nominated artist Julian Lytle, creator of “Ants.” Get familiar as we go all out and discuss their comics, webcomics, the end of Zuda, Doctor Who Anime, the fall of radio, Rick Ross, “The Expendettes” and a few comics that we think would fly off shelves but the big two would never publish.

Today wraps-up Shawn Pryor & Julian Lytle’s PF short, “Remember the Crime“. The last short for the Summer Shorts event begins on Wednesday, August 18.

Pictured below is the first in-progress sketch I received from Julian after he had read through Shawn’s action-packed script. Needless to say, he hit the ball out of the park with his stylization of the PF girls!
